Patriotism, competition, nationalism, and respect for the military in US sports: Public recognition of American institutionalized sports nationalism

Using new data from the National Sports and Society Survey ( N = 3993), this study first examines extent to which US adults recognize that sports teach love of country, competition as a way life, respect for military, how be American. We characterize sport society process American Institutionalized Nationalism. Then, multiple regression analyses are used assess dominant statuses, indicators traditionalism, fandom associated with beliefs about Nationalism its component values. Results suggest commonly agree American; they especially likely life country. Many also teaching military American, but most do not. In addition, expected, identifying male, heterosexual, Christian, Republican, more fan is consistently positively agreeing patriotic, capitalistic, militaristic, nationalistic contrast expectations, we find evidence White less than Black Latinx values; college educated those high school education or patriotism, capitalism, militarism, nationalism. This may because have traditionally been perceived offer rather inclusive fair social economic opportunities non-Whites educated.
